3וְאִם בְּאֵיזֶה אֹנְס נִתְפָּס בַּחֲבוּרַת בַּעֲלֵי הַלָּשׁוֹן, וְשׁוֹמֵעַ שֶׁהֵם מְדַבְּרִים לָשׁוֹן הָרָע, אִם הוּא מְשַׁעֵר שֶׁאֶפְשָׁר, (יב) שֶׁתּוֹכַחְתּוֹ תּוֹעִיל לָהֶם לְהַפְסִיקָם מִזֶּה, בְּוַדַּאי מְחֻיָּב הוּא לְהוֹכִיחָם מִדִּין תּוֹרָה, וַאֲפִלּוּ אִם הוּא מְשַׁעֵר, שֶׁתּוֹכַחְתּוֹ לֹא תּוֹעִיל לָהֶם, שֶׁיַּפְסִיקוּ עַל יְדֵי זֶה, אַךְ (יג) לֹא יְקַלְקֵל גַּם כֵּן עַל יְדֵי זֶה, גַּם בָּזֶה אֵינוֹ רַשַּׁאי לִשְׁתֹּקּ, כִּי פֶּן יֹאמְרוּ עָלָיו, כִּי הוּא כְּמוֹ הֵם, וְכִי הוֹדָה עַל דִּבְרֵיהֶם, אַף כִּי יִתְחַיֵּב (יד) לַעֲנוֹת וְלִגְעֹר בָּהֶם לִכְבוֹד נָקִּי וְצַּדִּיקּ, אֲשֶׁר יָשִׂיחוּ בּוֹ. וְזֶה אֶחָד מִן הַדְּבָרִים, אֲשֶׁר יִתְחַיֵּב לַעֲזֹב עֲבוּר זֶה חֶבְרַת הָרְשָׁעִים, כִּי יֵעָנִשׁ בְּשָׁמְעוֹ אֶת דִּבְרֵיהֶם, וְיִלְאֶה לַעֲנוֹתָם.
And if by some mischance he were "caught" in a company of "men of the tongue" and heard them speaking lashon hara — if he assumes that his reproof may avail to stop them, he certainly must reprove them according to the din of the Torah. And even if he assumes that his reproof will not avail to stop them, but that he will not make matters worse by reproving them, here, too, he may not remain silent, lest they assume that he is like they are and acquiesces in what they say. How much more so must he answer and rebuke them in [defense of] the honor of an innocent man and a tzaddik, whom they berate. This is one of the reasons that one must leave a company of evildoers — for he will be punished for hearing their words and failing to reproach them.
