וְדַע דְּאִסוּר רְכִילוּת הוּא אֲפִלּוּ עַל עַם הָאָרֶץ, כִּי גַּם הוּא בִּכְלַל עַמֶּיךָ. וְאַף שֶׁהוּא רוֹאֶה בְּבֵרוּר, שֶׁעַם הָאָרֶץ זֶה גִּנָּה לְאֶחָד שֶׁלֹּא בְּפָנָיו עַל חִנָּם, וְהַדִּין הוּא עִם אוֹתוֹ פְּלוֹנִי, אַף עַל פִּי כֵן הֲלֹא בֵּרַרְנוּ לְעֵיל בִּכְלָל א', דְּאִסוּר רְכִילוּת הוּא אֲפִלּוּ עַל אֱמֶת. וְכָל שֶׁכֵּן לְסַפֵּר רְכִילוּת עַל תַּלְמִיד חָכָם, הֶעָוֹן יוֹתֵר גָּדוֹל וְיוֹתֵר עָצוּם מִפְּנִי כַּמָּה טְעָמִים:
And know that the issur of rechiluth obtains even [if spoken] against an am ha'aretz [(ignoramus)], he, too, being in the category of "your people." And even if one sees clearly that this am ha'aretz demeaned someone, not to his face, in vain, and that the din is with the other, still, have we not explained above (Principle I) that the issur of rechiluth obtains even if spoken truthfully? How much greater and more severe is the sin of speaking rechiluth against a Torah scholar, for several reasons:
