Psalm 86from Midrash Tehillim

תפלה לדוד הטה ה' אזנך. אמר ר' לוי אגיסטרון זה נתן משה ליהודה בשעה שביקש ליפטר מן העולם שנאמר (דברים לג ז) וזאת ליהודה ויאמר. לפיכך הטה ה' אזנך ענני. שמרה נפשי כי חסיד אני. הקב"ה נקרא חסיד שנאמר (ירמיה ג יב) חסיד אני נאם ה'. ודוד קרא עצמו חסיד. אמר רבי אבא בשם רבי אלכסנדרי כל מי ששומע קללתו ושותק וספק בידו למחות נעשה שותף להקב"ה שכן הוא שומע לאומות העכו"ם שמחרפין אותו לפניו והיה יכול לאבדן בשעה אחת ושותק. אף דוד כן היה שומע קללתו ושותק. לפיכך שמרה נפשי כי חסיד אני:

A prayer to David, "Incline your ear, O Lord." Rabbi Levi said that this refers to the gift that Moses gave to Judah when he sought to depart from the world, as it is stated, "And this for Judah he said" (Deuteronomy 33:7). Therefore, "Incline your ear, O Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and needy." Preserve my soul, for I am godly. The Holy One, blessed be He, is called "godly," as it is stated, "I am godly, says the Lord" (Jeremiah 3:12), and David called himself "godly." Rabbi Abba said in the name of Rabbi Alexandri: Whoever hears his disgrace and remains silent, and has the ability to protest, becomes a partner with the Holy One, blessed be He. For He listens to the nations of the world who blaspheme Him, and He could have destroyed them in one moment, but remains silent. David also heard his disgrace and remained silent. Therefore, "Preserve my soul, for I am godly."

חנני ה' כי אליך אקרא כל היום. וכי איפשר לו לאדם להתפלל כל היום אלא העולם הזה שהוא יום לאומות העכו"ם ולילה לישראל. הוי כי אליך אקרא כל היום. שמח נפש עבדך כי אליך ה' נפשי אשא. בר קפרא אומר אם יש לו לאדם עבד אם יאמר לו אני לוקח לך בגד מיד משמחו. מה אם בשר ודם אומר לו לעבדו כך משמחו אנו על אחת כמה וכמה שאנו עבדיך. הוי שמח נפש עבדך:

Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I call to you all day long. And is it possible for a person to pray all day long? Only in this world, which is a day for the nations of the world and a night for Israel. But I call to you all day long. Rejoice the soul of your servant, for to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. Bar Kappara says, if a person has a servant and says to him, "I will buy you a garment," he is happy. How much more so if a person says to his flesh and blood servant, "Serve me," are we happy to serve you, O Lord. Rejoice the soul of your servant.

כי אתה ה' טוב וסלח. אמר רבי פנחס הכהן כף מאזנים מעויין כאן עוונות וכאן זכיות. מה הקב"ה עושה חוטף שטר אחד מהחובות ומיד הוא מטה לכף זכות שנאמר (בראשית לט כא) ויט אליו חסד. ורבנן אמרי מסייע לכף של עוונות ומעלהו ומיד הזכיות מכריעות שנאמר (מיכה ז יח) מי אל כמוך נושא עון ועובר על פשע:

"For You, Lord, are good and forgiving." Rabbi Pinchas HaKohen said that a scale is tipped here with sins on one side and merits on the other. What does the Holy One, blessed be He, do? He takes one note of debt and immediately puts it on the side of merit, as it is said, "And He extended loving-kindness to him" (Genesis 39:21). And the Rabbis say that He supports the scale of sins and raises it, and immediately the merits outweigh them, as it is said, "Who is a G-d like You, forgiving iniquity and remitting transgression" (Micah 7:18).

אין כמוך באלקים ה'. מלך בשר ודם בונה את התחתונים ואחר כך בונה העליונים אבל הקב"ה אינו כן בנה את העליונים ואחר כך בנה את התחתונים שנאמר (בראשית א א) בראשית ברא אלקים את השמים ואת הארץ. בשר ודם אין צורתו עושה צורה אבל הקב"ה צורתו עושה צורה שנאמר (שם כ) ישרצו המים שרץ נפש חיה. ואדם בצורתו של הקב"ה ועושה צורה. ושמים וארץ צורתו של הקב"ה שנאמר (שם ב ד) אלה תולדות השמים והארץ. הוי אין כמוך באלקים ה'. כל גוים אשר עשית יבואו וישתחוו לפניך ה'. בעון ולא בעון (פי' רוצים ולא רוצים) תבירי קדל. ויכבדו לשמך. למה כי גדול אתה ועושה נפלאות וגו'. אמר רבי תנחום בשר ודם מקלסין אותו בפניו ומקלסין אפרכיו עמו למה שהם מקולסין עמו בקלוסו והם נוטלין עמו במשאו. אבל הקב"ה אין אדם נושא עמו במשאו. תדע לך שכן רבי חנינא ורבי יוחנן אמרי בשני או בחמישי נבראו המלאכים במזמור למעלה:

There is none like You among the gods, Lord. You are a King of flesh and blood who builds the lower world first, and then the upper world. But the Holy One, blessed be He, does not build the upper world first and then the lower world, as it is said, "In the beginning G-d created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). Flesh and blood cannot make a form that creates a form, but the Holy One, blessed be He, makes His form create a form, as it is said, "Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures" (Genesis 1:20). Man is made in the image of the Holy One, blessed be He, and makes a form that creates a form. The heavens and the earth are the form of the Holy One, blessed be He, as it is said, "These are the generations of the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 2:4). There is none like You among the gods, Lord. All nations whom You have made shall come and bow down before You, O Lord, and shall glorify Your name. For You are great and do wondrous things. Rabbi Tanchum said, "Flesh and blood insult him to his face and insult his descendants with him, but when they insult him, they take their load with him. But the Holy One, blessed be He, does not burden anyone with His load." Know that Rabbi Chanina and Rabbi Yochanan said that on Monday or on Thursday the angels were created in Psalm above.

הורני ה' דרכך. אמר דוד לפני הקב"ה רבונו של עולם אם ראית אותי יוצא מן הדרך השטני בשבילך. הוי הורני ה' דרכך. אמר ר' יצחק אית דאמרי לה בשם ר' חנינא בר אבהו משל למה הדבר דומה לאדם אחד שהיו לו שתי פרות אחת חורשת ואחת שאינה חורשת מה הוא עושה נוטל העול מעליה ונותן על שתיהן ועושה לאותה שאינה חורשת שתחרוש. מה דבר שאינו מבקשת לקבל עול את עושה לה לקבל העול בעל כרחה ומדריך אותה להיכן הוא מבקש כך הוא ליצר הרע אין אתה מדריכו ליצר טוב שנאמר (תהלים כז יא) הורני ה' דרכך. אודך ה' אלקי בכל לבבי. ביצר טוב וביצר רע שלא יהא בהם עקף. א"ר חייא מהו והצלת נפשי משאול תחתיה. רבי יודן אמר דרכן של מנאפים היא נתונה בעמקה של שאול. הוי כי חסדך גדול עלי והצלת נפשי משאול תחתיה:

My Lord, guide me in Your path. As David said before the Almighty, "If You see me deviating from Your path, it is for You that I do so." Guide me in Your path, my Lord. Rabbi Yitzhak said in the name of Rabbi Chanina bar Abba, "What is this matter similar to? It is like a person who had two cows, one that plowed and one that did not. What did he do? He removed the yoke from the plow and placed it on the other cow and made the one that did not plow, plow. What is something that does not desire to accept the burden that is placed upon it? It is forced to accept the burden against its will and is guided to where it is desired. So too, with the evil inclination, one must not guide it to where it desires to go, as it says, "Guide me in Your path, Lord." I will thank You, Lord, with all my heart, both with the good inclination and with the evil inclination, that I may not be ensnared by them. Rabbi Chiya asked, "What is 'And You saved my soul from the lowest depths?'" Rabbi Yudan said, "The path of adulterers is set in the depths of Sheol." Guide me, for Your kindness is great upon me, and You have saved my soul from the depths of Sheol....

אלקים זדים קמו עלי וגו'. ואתה ה' אל רחום וחנון. אמר רבי שמואל בר נחמני מאריך רוחו עם הרשעים וחוזר וגובה מהם מאריך רוחו עם הצדיקים וחוזר ומשפיע להם טובה ושלוה. אמר רבי אחא בשם רבי תנחום בר חייא מאריך רוחו תחלה אבל התחיל לגבות גובה וכשמאריך רוחו הוא מרחיק את האף שנאמר (ישעיה יג ה) באים מארץ מרחק ה' וכלי זעמו. משל למלך שהיה לו לגיונות רעים וכל מדינה שמורדת בו שולח אותן והולכין ומחריבין אותה. מה עשה אותו המלך הרחיק אותן ממדינתו שלא יחבלו המדינה. א"ר ברכיה בשם רבי לוי מלאך שהוא ממונה על האף רחוק הוא. שנאמר באים מארץ מרחק. אמר הקב"ה שאם אכעס על בני עד שיבוא האף לכלות הן באין בכנופיא ואני מקבלן ותוהא כביכול. הוי ארך אפים:

"G-d, the arrogant have risen against me, etc. But You, Lord, are merciful and gracious." Rabbi Shmuel bar Nachmani said that G-d extends His patience with the wicked and then punishes them, but He extends His patience with the righteous and rewards them with good and peace. Rabbi Acha said in the name of Rabbi Tanchum bar Chiya that G-d initially extends His patience, but once He begins to punish, He pushes away His anger, as it is said, "They come from a faraway land, from the end of the heavens—the Lord and the weapons of His anger." It is compared to a king who had evil troops, and every rebellious state that rose against him, he would send them to destroy it. What did the king do? He pushed them away from his kingdom so they wouldn't damage it. Rabbi Berachiah said in the name of Rabbi Levi that the angel appointed over anger is far away, as it is said, "They come from a faraway land." G-d said that if He were to get angry with the people until His anger was quenched, they would come to Him in large groups, but He accepts them and they are, so to speak, "spared." Therefore, be patient.

פנה אלי וחנני. אמר דוד רבונו של עולם תפנה מכל עסקיך ופנה אלי וחנני. עשה עמי אות לטובה באחיתופל. כי אתה עזרתני בחושי הארכי. ונחמתני בנתן הנביא שאמר (שמואל-ב יב יג) גם ה' העביר חטאתך:

Turn to me and be gracious to me. David our master said, "O Lord of the world, turn away from all your affairs and turn to me and be gracious to me. Make a sign for my benefit against Ahithophel, for you have helped me through my distress. And you have comforted me through Nathan the prophet, who said, 'The Lord has also forgiven your sin'." (2 Samuel 12:13)

דבר אחר עשה עמי אות לטובה. ביעקב נאמר הפסוק הזה. עשה עמי בעשו ואלופיו. כי אתה ה' עזרתני ברחל. ונחמתני בלבן. דבר אחר מדבר בישראל. בשעה שהיתה לשון של זהורית נתלה על פתח ההיכל מתלבן היו יודעים שנשמעה תפלתם. הוי עשה עמי אות לטובה. ויראו שונאי ויבושו שהיו אומות העכו"ם אומרים אינו נמחל להם. דבר אחר עזרתני בראש השנה. ונחמתני ביום הכפורים שנאמר (ויקרא טז ל) כי ביום הזה יכפר עליכם לטהר אתכם מכל חטאתיכם:

Another thing, You have done a sign with me for good. In Yaakov, this verse is mentioned. You have dealt with me in relation to Esav and his chieftains. For You, Hashem, helped me with Rachel, and comforted me with Lavan. Another thing, it is spoken of in Israel. When the tongue of crimson wool was hung at the entrance of the Sanctuary, they knew that their prayers had been heard. Be with me for good, and let my enemies see and be ashamed, so that the nations of the world will say that they are not forgiven. Another thing, You helped me on Rosh Hashanah and comforted me on Yom Kippur, as it is said, "For on this day shall atonement be made for you, to cleanse you; from all your sins shall ye be clean before the Lord." (Leviticus 16:30)
