Psalm 16from Midrash Tehillim

מכתם לדוד שמרני אל כי חסיתי בך. מכאן אמרו כל הנהנה מן העולם הזה בלא ברכה מעל עד שיתירו לו המצוות. א"ר אבהו כתיב (דברים כב ט) פן תקדש המלאה הזרע. העולם הזה עשוי ככרם. ומהו פדייתו ברכה. ומאי טעמא אמר ריש לקיש אמרת לה' ה' אתה טובתי בל עליך. אם אכלת וברכת כאילו משלך אכלת. דבר אחר בל עליך יובלו כל הטובות ויבואו עליך. דבר אחר מבלה אני כל הטובות בגופך וגופך אינו בלה. אמר רבי אחא כשאני מביא טובה בעולם איני מביא בלעדיך. כמה דאמר (בראשית מא מד) ובלעדיך לא ירים איש את ידו:

"Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings" (Psalm 17:8). From here they said that whoever enjoys this world without blessings will be held accountable until he performs the commandments. Rabbi Abbahu said, "It is written, 'Lest the fullness of the earth make the seed holy' (Deuteronomy 22:9). This world is like a vineyard. And how is its redemption a blessing? Why did Rish Lakish say, 'You have said to the Lord, "You are my Lord, apart from you I have no good" (Psalm 16:2)?' If you eat and bless, it is as if you have eaten from your own. Another interpretation is that 'Apart from you, all the good things will pass away and come upon you.' Another interpretation is that 'I consume all the good things in my body, but my body does not consume them.' Rabbi Aha said, 'When I bring good into the world, I do not bring it without you.' As it is said, 'And without you no man shall raise his hand' (Genesis 41:44)."...

דבר אחר אמרת לה'. אמר דוד לפני הקב"ה רבונו של עולם אף על פי שהייתי מלך המלכתיך עלי. אמר לו הקב"ה איני מחזיק לך טובה טובתי בל עליך. ולמי אני מחזיק לקדושים אשר בארץ. שאין הקב"ה קורא לצדיקים קדושים עד שינתנו בארץ עד יום מיתה. למה שיצר הרע מיצר את האדם בעולם הזה ואינו מאמין בהן עד יום מיתה. וכן שלמה אומר (קהלת ז כ) כי אין אדם צדיק בארץ אשר יעשה טוב ולא יחטא. לפיכך אינו נקרא קדוש עד שינתן בארץ. ואפילו אבות לא נקראו קדושים עד שנתנו בארץ. שנאמר (איוב טו טו) הן בקדושיו לא יאמין. ואימתי האמין בהם בשעה שאמר למשה (שמות ג טז) לך ואספת את זקני ישראל. מכאן סמך משה ואמר (שם לב יג) זכור לאברהם ליצחק ולישראל עבדיך. אמר ר' פנחס אלו בקשו אבות העולם שתהא דירתן למעלה יכולים היו ואף על פי כן לא נקראו קדושים עד שנתנו לארץ ונסתם הגולל בפניהם. א"ר חמא מאי קרא (איוב כד כב) ומשך אבירים בכחו. זה יצר הרע. אבירים בכחו כגון דור אנוש ודור המבול ודור הפלגה וסדומים. כמו שכתוב (בראשית ג יז) בעצבון תאכלנה. ואומר (שם טז) הרבה ארבה עצבונך והרונך. הרבית עצבונך לאבות העולם. שמא הפסידו כלום תלמוד לומר בל אסיך נסכיהם מדם. כההיא דתנינן ירדו ובאו למטה מן המערכה ומלחום חזרו להם ללשכת הגזית וקראו את שמע:

You said something else to G-d. David said before the Almighty, "Even though I was a king, Your Kingship is upon me." The Almighty replied, "I don't hold your goodness against you, but to whom do I hold the Saints in the land? The Almighty doesn't call the righteous holy until they are given the land and until the day of death. Why did the Evil Inclination make people in this world and not believe in them until the day of death? Similarly, Solomon said, "There is no righteous person on earth who does good and does not sin" (Ecclesiastes 7:20). Therefore, one is not called holy until they are given the land. Even the Patriarchs were not called holy until they were given the land. As it says, "Behold, in His holy ones He will not trust" (Job 15:15). And when did He trust them? When He said to Moses, "Go and gather the elders of Israel" (Exodus 3:16). From this, Moses inferred and said, "Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants" (Exodus 32:13). Rabbi Pinchas said, "The forefathers of the world wanted their dwelling to be above, and even so, they were not called holy until they were given the land and the exile was closed before them." Rabbi Chama asked, "What is the verse that states, 'He drags the mighty with His power'? This is the Evil Inclination. 'Mighty with his power' refers to the generation of Enosh, the generation of the Flood, the generation of the Dispersion, and the people of Sodom, as it is written, 'In pain shall you eat of it' (Genesis 3:17), and it says, 'I will increase your pain and your travail' (Genesis 3:16). He increased their pain, referring to the forefathers of the world. Did they lose anything? Scripture says, 'I will not pour out their drink offerings of blood' (Psalm 16:4). As we learned, they went down and returned from the war and recited the Shema in the chamber of hewn stone....

דבר אחר ירבו עצבותם. אמר דוד רבונו של עולם הרבית עצבונות לדורו של שמד ומתו על קדושת השם. אמר לו הקב"ה דוד הפסידו כלום בל אסיך נסכיהם מדם. דמם חביב עלי יותר מן הקרבנות. אמר רבי בשם ר' אידי לשלשה חלקים נחלקו היסורין. אחד נטלו אבות וכל הדורות. ואחד דורו של שמד. ואחד דורו של מלך המשיח. מה היו עושין בדורו של שמד היו מביאין כדוריות של ברזל ומלבנין אותם תחת שיחיהן ומשיאין את נפשותיהן מהן. וחוזרין ומביאין קרומיות של קנה ונותנים תחת צפרניהן ובדבר הזה מתו על קדושת השם.

Another thing that angered them was when King David said that many of his generation would suffer greatly and die for the sanctification of G-d's name. The Lord said to him that their sacrifices were not in vain, for their blood was more precious to Him than sacrifices. Rabbi Yehudah said in the name of Rabbi Idi that suffering was divided into three parts: one part was taken by the ancestors and all generations, one part by the generation of the destruction of the Temple, and one part by the generation of the Messiah. What did the generation of the destruction of the Temple do? They would bring iron balls and flatten them under their breasts, giving up their lives for the sanctification of G-d's name. And they would also bring reeds and put them under their fingernails, and in this way, they died for the sanctification of G-d's name.

דבר אחר ירבו עצבותם. אמר דוד לפני הקב"ה בני אדם שממהרין לפתחך לבוא ומאחרין לצאת הרבית להם עצבונות. וכשהיו אומרים להם נסכו לעבודה זרה והוא אומר איני מנסך. זבח איני זובח. שתה מים בכוס אדום איני שותה. אומר לו נדור בשם עבודה זרה ואומר איני נודר. שכך כתוב לנו על ידי משה רבינו (שמות כג יג) ושם אלקים אחרים לא תזכירו. ובל אשא את שמותם על שפתי. אלא ה' מנת חלקי וכוסי. אמר ר' יהודה בשם ריש לקיש מהו תומך גורלי הגורל הזה תמכני בסיני:

Another thing that will increase their frustration. David said before the Creator of the world that people who rush to come before Him but delay in leaving cause them much distress. And when they were told to pour libations for foreign worship and He said, "I will not pour." "I will not slaughter" "I will not drink water in a red cup." They say to him, "Swear in the name of foreign worship." And He says, "I will not swear." As Moses taught us, "Do not mention the names of other gods or let them be heard from your mouth." But G-d is my allotted portion and cup. Rabbi Yehuda said in the name of Reish Lakish, "What does 'support my lot' mean? This lot should support me at Sinai."

חבלים נפלו לי בנעימים. שנים תורה שבכתב ותורה שבעל פה. א"ר פנחס הפלת גורלות על אומות העכו"ם ושלי נמצא בנעימים. (דברים לב ח) בהנחל עליון גוים. (שם ט) כי חלק ה' עמו. כאיניש דאמר פלניא נפלה לפלוני. אף נחלת שפרה עלי. על ששמחתי בחלקי נעשה לי שפיר. רבי יוחנן אמר שכרן של מצוות שפרו עלי:

"Chords have fallen to me in pleasant places." (Psalm 16:6) There are two Torahs, the written Torah and the oral Torah. Rabbi Pinchas said: "Lots were cast for the nations of the world, and my lot fell in pleasant places" (Deuteronomy 32:8), "When the Most High gave nations their homes" (ibid. 32:8), "For the LORD's portion is His people" (ibid. 32:9). Just as one might say, "Ploni's estate fell to Ploni," so too, "The fair portion assigned to me is indeed delightful" (ibid. 32:9), and "For I have received a goodly heritage" (Psalms 16:6). Rabbi Yochanan said: "The reward for performing commandments has fallen to me."

אברך את ה' אשר יעצני. ר' שמואל בר נחמן היה פותרו באברהם אבינו שלא למדו רב. ומי למדו. תני רבי שמעון בן יוחאי מלמד שזימן לו הקב"ה שתי כליותיו והיו נובעות חכמה ודעת. תדע לך שכן הוא שנגלה עליו הקב"ה בין הבתרים והראה לו ארבעה דברים. תורה וקרבנות גיהנם ומלכיות וכו' (במזמור ראשון):

I will bless the Lord who counsels me. Rabbi Shmuel bar Nachman used to interpret this verse with regard to Abraham our father, who did not learn from a teacher. So who taught him? Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai taught that G-d summoned Abraham's two kidneys, and they overflowed with wisdom and knowledge. You should know that this is so, as it was revealed to him between the pieces, and G-d showed him four things: the Torah, the sacrifices, Gehenna, and the kingdoms, and so on (in Psalm 1)....

שויתי ה' לנגדי תמיד. אמר רב בשעה שהוא מברך צריך אדם לומר ברוך אתה ה'. ושמואל אמר ברוך ה'. על דעתיה דרב דכתיב שויתי ה' לנגדי תמיד כי מימיני בל אמוט. ר' זעירא ורבי יהודה תרויהון אמרו כל ברכה שאין בה מלכות אינה ברכה. מאי טעמא (תהלים קמה א) ארוממך אלקי המלך. כי מימיני בל אמוט. היו דברי תורה מיומנין לו לדוד היו מביאין לו נפלים והוא בודקן. והוא דהוה אמר (תהלים קיט מו) ואדברה בעדותיך נגד מלכים ולא אבוש:

"I have set the Lord always before me." Rav said that when a person blesses, they should say "Baruch Atah Hashem (Blessed are You, Lord)." Shmuel said to say "Baruch Hashem (Blessed be the Name)." According to Rav's opinion, it is written "I have set the Lord always before me, because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved" (Psalm 16:8). Rabbi Zeira and Rabbi Yehuda Taruyah said, "Any blessing that does not include mentioning the Kingdom is not a proper blessing." What is the reason for this? "I will extol You, my G-d, O King, and I will bless Your name forever and ever. Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved" (Psalm 145:1,16). The words of the Torah were skilled for David, and they brought him cases to examine. And he said (Psalm 119:46), "I will speak of your testimonies also before kings, and will not be ashamed."

לכן שמח לבי ויגל כבודי. אמר רבי אבהו הכבוד גולה בשעה שהקטנים הוגים להשתמש בו. דבר אחר לכן שמח לבי בדברי תורה. ויגל כבודי במלך המשיח שעתיד לצאת ממני שנאמר (ישעיה ד ה) כי על כל כבוד חופה. אף בשרי ישכון לבטח. לאחר מיתה. אמר רבי יצחק מלמד שלא שלט בו רמה ותולעה:

"Therefore my heart rejoices, and my soul is glad; even my flesh shall rest in hope." Rabbi Abbahu said, "Honor is exiled when children make use of it." Another interpretation: "Therefore my heart rejoices in the words of the Torah, and my honor shall be revealed in the King Messiah who will come from me, as it is said, 'For on every glory there shall be a covering' (Isaiah 4:5). Even my flesh shall dwell in safety, after death." Rabbi Isaac said, "This teaches that the worm and the maggot did not have power over King David's body."

כי לא תעזוב נפשי לשאול לא תתן חסידך. הקב"ה נקרא חסיד שנאמר (ירמיה ג יב) כי חסיד אני נאם ה'. ודוד קרא עצמו חסיד שנאמר (תהלים פו ב) שמרה נפשי כי חסיד אני. א"ר אלכסנדרי כל מי ששומע קללתו ושותק נקרא חסיד. ודוד שמע קללתו ושתק בדין הוא שיקרא חסיד:

"For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol; you will not allow your pious one to see the Pit." (Psalms 16:10) The Holy One, blessed be He, is called the "pious one" as it says, "For I am pious," says the Lord (Jeremiah 3:12). David also called himself a "pious one" as it says, "Guard my soul, for I am pious" (Psalms 86:2). Rabbi Alexandri said: Anyone who hears his disgrace and remains silent is called a pious one. David heard his disgrace and remained silent, therefore he is called a pious one.

תודיעני אורח חיים. א"ר יודן אמר דוד לפני הקב"ה תודיעני אורח חיים. אמר לו דוד חיים את בעי צפה ליראה. שנאמר (משלי י כז) יראת ה' תוסיף ימים. רבי עזריה אמר אמר דוד רבון העולמים תודיעני אורח חיים. אמר לו חיים את בעי צפה לתורה. שנאמר (שם ג יח) עץ חיים היא למחזיקים בה. רבא אמר אמר דוד לפני הקב"ה תודיעני אורח חיים. אמר לו חיים את בעי עשה ואכול. שנאמר נעימות בימינך נצח. תרין אמוראין חד אמר זה שבא מכח התורה שנאמר (דברים לג ב) מימינו אש דת למו. וחד אמר אלו סופרין ומלמדי תינוקות לאמתן שהן עתידין לישב בצלו של הקב"ה. שנאמר שויתי ה' לנגדי תמיד. דבר אחר תודיעני אורח חיים. ר' אבין פתר קריא בישראל בר"ה ויה"כ. שובע שמחות. אל תיקרי שובע אלא שבע. אלו ז' כתות של צדיקים שעתידים לראות פני שכינה לעולם הבא. שנאמר תודיעני אורח חיים שובע שמחות את פניך. אל תקרי שובע אלא שבע. וכן הוא אומר (שופטים ה לא) ואוהביו כצאת השמש בגבורתו. דבר אחר שובע. אל תקרי שובע אלא שבע. אלו שבע מצוות שבחג ארבעה שבלולב וחגיגה ושמחה וסוכה:

"Teach me the way of life." Rabbi Yudan said, "David said before the Holy One, blessed be He, 'Teach me the way of life.' And He said to him, 'You desire life? Look to the fear of the Lord, for fear of the Lord adds days.' Rabbi Azariah said, 'David said before the Holy One, blessed be He, "Teach me the way of life." And He said to him, "You desire life? Look to the Torah, for it is a tree of life to those who hold fast to it."' Rava said, 'David said before the Holy One, blessed be He, "Teach me the way of life." And He said to him, "You desire life? Do good and eat well, for pleasantness is in your right hand, and victory."' Two Amoraim said different explanations: one said it refers to those who come to study Torah, as it says, 'From His right hand came a fiery law for them' (Deuteronomy 33:2); and the other said it refers to scribes and teachers of children, who are destined to dwell in the shadow of the Holy One, blessed be He, as it says, 'I have set the Lord always before me.' Another interpretation is 'Teach me the way of life.' Rabbi Avin said it refers to the proper reading of the Torah on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and the seven species of the Land of Israel. 'Satiated with joy from Your countenance' - do not read 'satiated', but rather 'satiated sevenfold.' These are the seven classes of righteous individuals who will see the face of the Divine Presence in the World to Come, as it says, 'You will make me know the way of life; the fullness of joys is in Your presence.' Do not read 'fullness', but rather 'sevenfold.' And it also says, 'And those who love Him are like the sun when it goes forth in its might.'"

דבר אחר מכתב לדוד. אמר דוד מכתם אני. משל למה הדבר דומה לאחד שהיה עובר בדרך ובידו שני איסרין ראה פונדק אחד אלו אוכלין דגים ואלו אוכלים בשר. אמר מה אעשה אם אומר לו הבא לי לאכול מיד מביא לי פסיונין ואין בידי אלא שני איסרין. הלך ואמר לו תן לי בשני איסרין. אמר מה אתן לך בשני איסרין. אמר לו ולא שמעת מה המשל אומר לפי זוזי רקוד. כך אמר דוד המלך אין לי לישב עם הגדולים אמתין לי עם הקטנים. יהא אברהם יצחק ויעקב בקיטון ומשה ואהרן בטרקלין ואני בסף (תהלים פד יא) בחרתי הסתופף בבית אלקים. ואם אין לי שאשב בסף (שם קטז יט) בחצרות בית ה'. ואם אין לי שאשב בחצרות לא אצא מן הפונדק (שם) בתוככי ירושלים הללויה:

Another thing, a letter to David. David said, "I am a blot." It is comparable to someone who was passing by and had two coins in his hand. He saw a tavern, one of which served fish and the other served meat. He said, "What should I do? If I ask him to bring me food, immediately he will bring me a tray, but I only have two coins in my hand." So he went and said to him, "Give me food for two coins." He said, "What can I give you for two coins?" He said to him, "Didn't you hear what the parable says, 'Dance according to your coins'?" Similarly, King David said, "I cannot sit with the great ones, I wait with the little ones. Let Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob be in the pocket, and Moses and Aaron in the lining, and I will be at the threshold (Psalms 131:1). I have chosen to be humbled in the house of G-d. And if I do not have a place to sit at the threshold, then I will not leave the tavern (Psalms 84:11-12). Within the walls of Jerusalem, hallelujah."
