Psalm 45from Midrash Tehillim

למנצח על שושנים לבני קרח משכיל שיר ידידות. זה שאמר הכתוב (שיר השירים ו ב) דודי ירד לגנו. אלו בני קרח. ולא היו נכרים וכל מי שרואה אותן אומר קוצים הם. למה שהיו עם הקוצים ומה דרכן של קוצים לאש שנאמר (ישעיה לג יב) קוצים כסוחים באש יצתו. וכתיב (שמות כב ה) כי תצא אש ומצאה קוצים. וכתיב (במדבר טז לה) ואש יצאה מאת ה' ותאכל. ובני קרח שהיו שושנים נלקטו מבין הקוצים שלא יאכלו עמהם וקפץ הקדוש ברוך הוא עליהם והצילם. משל למלך שנכנס למדינה ובאו בני המדינה לעשות לו עטרה של זהב מקובעת באבנים טובות ומרגליות. יצאו ואמרו להם אין המלך מבקש עטרה של זהב יש כאן שושנים. מיד שמחו בני המדינה. כך קרח ועדתו אומרים מבקש הקדוש ברוך הוא מחתות של זהב. ואמר להם הקדוש ברוך הוא (חגי ב ח) לי הכסף ולי הזהב. ואפילו הקטרת (ישעיה א יג) קטורת תועבה היא לי. ומה אני מבקש של שושנים. אמרו בני קרח אנו שושנים. אמר להם הקדוש ברוך הוא נצחתם. הוי למנצח על שושנים שיר ידידות.

"To the conductor over the white lilies, a wise song of friendship. This refers to what is written (Song of Songs 2:1), 'My beloved has come down to his garden.' This is referring to the sons of Korah. They were not strangers, but anyone who saw them said they were thorns, as it is written (Isaiah 33:12), 'Thorns will sprout like grass in the fire.' And it is written (Exodus 22:5), 'When a fire breaks out and spreads to thorn bushes...' And it is written (Numbers 16:35), 'And fire came out from the Lord and consumed them.' The sons of Korah, who were lilies, were chosen from among the thorns so that they would not be consumed with them, and the Holy One, blessed be He, saved them.This can be compared to a king who entered a country, and the people of the country came to make for him a crown of gold, studded with good stones and pearls. They went out and said to each other, 'The king doesn't want a crown of gold; there are lilies here.' Immediately, the people of the country rejoiced. So too, Korah and his assembly said, 'The Holy One, blessed be He, wants vessels of gold.' And the Holy One, blessed be He, said to them (Haggai 2:8), 'The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine.' Even the incense (Isaiah 1:13) is an abomination to Me. And what am I asking for? Lilies. The sons of Korah said, 'We are lilies.' And the Holy One, blessed be He, said to them, 'You have been victorious.' Therefore, it says (Psalm 45:1), 'For the conductor, on the white lilies, a song of friendship.'

בשלשה דברים נאמר המזמור הזה. בניצוח במשכיל בשיר. כנגד שלשה בני קרח. ומפני שהם שלשה נאמר בשלשה ידידות. אמר הקדוש ברוך הוא כל אחד ואחד מהם ידידות הם לפני. מנין אתה יודע שהיה משה ואהרן וכל הגדולים באין לשמוע שירתן של בני קרח שנאמר למנצח לבני קרח משכיל וגו'. משמיע לידידים של הקב"ה. לכך נאמר שיר ידידות. ומלמדים לומר שירה להקב"ה שנאמר (ישעיה נד יג) וכל בניך למודי ה':

This psalm is said in three parts: 'To the conductor, on the white lilies, a wise song of friendship.' This corresponds to the three sons of Korah. And because there were three of them, it says 'friendship' three times. The Holy One, blessed be He, said, 'Each and every one of them is a friend of Mine.' How do we know that even Moses, Aaron, and all the great ones were not as eager to hear the song of the sons of Korah, as it says (Psalm 45:1), 'To the conductor over the white lilies, a wise song of friendship'? This teaches us to sing to the Holy One, blessed be He, as it says (Isaiah 54:13), 'And all your children shall be taught of the Lord.'"

דבר אחר זה שאמר הכתוב (הושע יד ו) אהיה כטל לישראל. פסוק זה נאמר לעולם הבא. כשם שאין הטל מזיק לכל בריה כך הצדיקים לעתיד לבוא עתידין לשבוע מזיו השכינה ואינן ניזוקין. שנאמר (תהלים טז יא) שובע שמחות את פניך. אמרו ישראל לפני הקדוש ברוך הוא רבון העולמים אימתי את גואלני. אמר להם לכשתרדו לירידה התחתונה אותה שעה אני גואל אתכם. שנאמר (הושע ב ב) ונקבצו בני יהודה ובני ישראל יחדו. אמרו בני קרח בירידה התחתונה אנו. כמה דאמר (תהלים מד כו) כי שחה לעפר נפשנו. מה כתיב אחריו קומה עזרתה לנו. ואמר להם הקדוש ברוך הוא הכל תלוי מכם כשם שהשושנה הזו מפרחת ולבה למעלה. אף אתם תעשו תשובה לפני ויהא לבבכם מכוון למעלה כשושנה הזאת. ואותה שעה אביא גואל שנאמר (הושע יד ו) אהיה כטל לישראל. ואימתי כשיפרח כשושנה. לכך נאמר למנצח על שושנים:

Another thing that the verse (Hosea 14:6) said is "I will be like the dew to Israel". This verse is said in reference to the world to come. Just as dew does not harm any creature, so too, the righteous in the future will dwell in the shade of the Shechinah (Divine Presence) and will not be harmed, as it says (Psalms 16:11), "You will fill me with joy in Your presence". Israel said to the Holy One, Blessed be He, "Master of the Universe, when will You redeem us?" He said to them, "When you descend to the lowest level, at that moment I will redeem you", as it says (Hosea 2:2), "And the children of Judah and the children of Israel will be gathered together". The children of Korah said, "We are in the lowest level", as it says (Psalms 44:26), "For our soul is bowed down to the dust". What is written afterwards? "Rise up, be our help". The Holy One, Blessed be He, said to them, "It all depends on you, just as this rose blooms upward and its heart is directed heavenward, so too, you shall repent before Me and let your heart be directed upward like this rose. At that moment, I will bring the redeemer, as it says (Hosea 14:6), 'I will be like the dew to Israel'. And when will this happen? When he blooms like a rose. Therefore, it says 'To the conductor, concerning the roses'."...

רחש לבי דבר טוב. להודיעך שלא יכלו להתודות בפיהם אלא כיון שרחש לבם בתשובה קבלם הקב"ה. וכן אומר (דברי הימים-א כח ט) ואתה שלמה בני דע את אלקי אביך ועבדהו בלב שלם. וכל מחשבות אינו אומר אלא (שם) וכל יצר מחשבות. ומהו וכל יצר. עד שאין האדם צר את המחשבה בלבו הקדוש ברוך הוא מבין. וכן בני קרח לא היו יכולין לומר שירה בפיהם אלא רחש לבם בתשובה ומיד קבלם. ולמה לא היו יכולין לומר שירה בפיהם שאול פתוחה מתחתיהם ואש מלהטת סביבותם. וכן הוא אומר (במדבר טז לה) ואש יצאה מאת ה'. (תהלים קו יז-יח) תפתח ארץ ותבלע דתן. ותבער אש בעדתם. והיו בני קרח רואין שאול פתוחה מכאן ואש מכאן ולא היו יכולין להתודות מפיהם. לכך רחש לבי. וכי לא היו שלשה ולמה אמר רחש לבי. אלא ללמדנו מה שכיון זה בלבו כיון זה בלבו ושלשתן היו שוין בלב אחד. אומר אני מעשי למלך. אם רחש למה אמירה ואם אמירה למה רחש. אלא כך אמרו אם בלבנו רחשנו כבר אמרנו מעשינו להקב"ה. לכך אני אומר מעשי למלך. דבר אחר רחש לבי בנבואה שנתנבאו בנבואה לעתיד לבוא. וכן חנה אומרת (שמואל א ב ו) ה' ממית ומחיה מוריד שאול ויעל, והן יורדין עד שהיה מגיע רגליהם לשאול, נגעו רגליהם לשאול, מיד הן עולין, לכך נאמר מוריד שאול ויעל:

My heart whispers good things. To inform you that they could not confess with their mouths until their hearts whispered in repentance and the Lord accepted them. Similarly, it says in Chronicles I 28:9, "And you, Solomon my son, know the G-d of your father, and serve Him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches all hearts and understands every plan and thought. If you seek Him, He will be found by you, but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever." And all thoughts are only said in the heart, as it says in the same verse, "and every inclination of thoughts." Until a person restrains the thought in his holy heart, the Lord does not understand. Similarly, the sons of Korah were not able to sing with their mouths until their hearts whispered in repentance, and then they were immediately accepted. And why were they unable to sing? Because Sheol was open beneath them, and fire was burning around them, as it says in Numbers 16:35, "And fire came forth from the Lord." In Psalm 106:17-18, it says, "The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram. And a fire was kindled in their assembly." The sons of Korah saw that Sheol was open here and fire was there, and they could not confess with their mouths. Therefore, my heart whispers. And why did it say "my heart whispers" if there were three of them and they were all equal in their hearts? It is to teach us that at one moment, one would have this thought in his heart, and at another moment, another would have the same thought in his heart, and all three were equal in one heart. Therefore, I say, "my actions are for the King." If there is a whisper in my heart, why speak out loud? And if I speak out loud, why whisper? Rather, they said, "If we whispered in our hearts, we have already expressed our actions to the Lord." Therefore, I say, "my actions are for the King." Another interpretation of "my heart whispers" is in prophecy, as they prophesied about the future. And similarly, Hannah said in Samuel I 2:6, "The Lord kills and brings to life."

דבר אחר למנצח על שושנים. משל למטרונית שראתה שלשה יוצאין ליצלב ופדתה אותם. אחר ימים ראתה אקלפרין טעונין קונטבריא של מלך. כך בני קרח חלקו עם אביהם. לקרח בליעת הארץ ובניו שעשו תשובה נעשו נביאים ונעשו שושנים. רחש לבי. משל למי שמבקש לעלות לבימה נטל קוטריס ונתן לדיין. אמר לו למה לא כתבתו. אמר לו לא היה לי פנאי. כך בני קרח לא היה להם פנאי לומר בשפתותיהם ואמרו בלבם. לכך כתיב אומר אני מעשי למלך. משל למי שהיה הולך לבימה מצאו בעל חובו אמר לו תן לי את חובי. אמר לו המתן לי עד שארד מן הבימה ואחר כך אפרע לך. כך אמרו בני קרח אין לנו פנאי לומר שירה ומשנפנה אומר אני מעשי למלך:

Another interpretation of "For the conductor, on shoshanim (lilies)." (Psalms 45:1) A parable of a noblewoman who saw three men being led to crucifixion and redeemed them. After some time, she saw aquiliferi (eagle-bearers) carrying the imperial standards. Similarly, the sons of Korah disagreed with their father. For Korah, there was the swallowing by the earth, but his sons, who repented, became prophets and became lilies. "My heart overflows." (Psalms 45:2) A parable of one who seeks to ascend the platform, takes a blank parchment and gives it to the judge. He asks him, "Why didn't you write in it?" He replies, "I didn't have time." Similarly, the sons of Korah didn't have time to speak with their lips, so they spoke with their hearts. Therefore it is written, "I say: my deeds are for the king" (ibid). A parable of one who was going to the platform and his creditor found him, saying, "Give me what you owe." He replied, "Wait for me until I come down from the platform, and then I'll pay you." Similarly, the sons of Korah said, "We don't have time to sing now, but when we're free, I will say: 'my deeds are for the king'."

"Your children shall be under your fathers. Rabbi Elazar, son of Rabbi Yosei, said: In the future, each and every person from Israel will have children like those of Egypt, as it is said, "Your children shall be under your fathers." And how many were our fathers when they left Egypt? Six hundred thousand. Rabbi Abbahu said: Do not be surprised, for a hen once laid two eggs in one day and one egg the next day. This is what is written, "For as the days of a tree shall be the days of My people" (Isaiah 65:22)."
