Candle-Lighting Blessing Prayer

The Edot HaMizrach blessings for lighting Shabbat and festival candles.

When to say it

At the proper local candle-lighting time before Shabbat or a festival.

The order of lighting and blessing, and the wording for festivals, follow household and community custom. Confirm local times separately.

Shabbat candles

נרות שבת

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְהֹוָה, אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָׁנוּ בְּמִצְוֹתָיו, וְצִוָּנוּ לְהַדְלִיק נֵר שֶׁל שַׁבָּת:

Blessed are You, Lord our G-d, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to light the Shabbat candle.
