Shabbat Day Kiddush Prayer

The Edot HaMizrach order for Shabbat-day Kiddush, including the customary verses and blessing over wine.

When to say it

Before the Shabbat-day meal, after the morning prayer service.

Customary introductory verses vary. The blessing over wine is the essential displayed Kiddush blessing; follow your household's custom.

Verses before Kiddush

אִם תָּשִׁיב מִשַּׁבָּת רַגְלֶךָ, עֲשׂוֹת חֲפָצֶךָ בְּיוֹם קָדְשִׁי, וְקָרָאתָ לַשַּׁבָּת עֹנֶג לִקְדוֹשׁ יְהֹוָה מְכֻבָּד, וְכִבַּדְתּוֹ מֵעֲשׂוֹת דְּרָכֶיךָ, מִמְּצוֹא חֶפְצְךָ וְדַבֵּר דָּבָר: אָז תִּתְעַנַּג עַל יְהֹוָה וְהִרְכַּבְתִּיךָ עַל בָּמֳתֵי אָרֶץ, וְהַאֲכַלְתִּיךָ נַחֲלַת יַעֲקֹב אָבִיךָ כִּי פִּי יְהֹוָה דִּבֵּר:

A psalm of David. Hashem is my shepherd; I shall not lack. He makes me lie down in green pastures and leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul and guides me in paths of righteousness for His Name's sake. Even when I walk through the valley of deepest shadow, I will fear no evil, for You are with me. Your rod and staff comfort me. You prepare a table before me in view of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil and my cup overflows. Surely goodness and kindness will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of Hashem for many years.

וְשָׁמְרוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת הַשַּׁבָּת, לַעֲשׂוֹת אֶת הַשַּׁבָּת לְדֹרֹתָם בְּרִית עוֹלָם: בֵּינִי וּבֵין בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אוֹת הִיא לְעֹלָם, כִּי שֵׁשֶׁת יָמִים עָשָׂה יְהֹוָה אֶת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֶת הָאָרֶץ וּבַיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי שָׁבַת וַיִּנָּפַשׁ: עַל כֵּן בֵּרַךְ יְהֹוָה אֶת יוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת וַיְקַדְשֵׁהוּ:

If you restrain your foot because of Shabbat, from pursuing your affairs on My holy day; if you call Shabbat a delight, Hashem's holy day honored, and honor it by not following your usual ways, seeking your affairs, or speaking of them, then you shall delight in Hashem. I will make you ride upon the heights of the earth and feed you the inheritance of Jacob your father, for the mouth of Hashem has spoken.

ואומר המקדש ואפילו אם מקדש כשהוא לבד

The Children of Israel shall observe Shabbat, establishing Shabbat throughout their generations as an everlasting covenant. It is an eternal sign between Me and the Children of Israel that in six days Hashem made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day He ceased and rested.

Blessed are You, Hashem, our G-d, King of the universe, Who creates the fruit of the vine.

ושותה רביעית או מלוא לוגמיו ויתן לכל המסובין, ואחר כך יטול ידיו מעומד, ויברך "על נטילת ידיים" ויברך "המוציא לחם מן הארץ" ויבצע על שני כיכרות כנזכר בליל שבת.
